What is SUP Yoga?
SUP Yoga, also called paddleboard yoga, aqua yoga and boga yoga, is the latest craze in the yoga world. It started back in 2008 when DFW Surf founder Tyler Marshall and Float on Yoga founder Natalie Tailford used paddle boarding as a tool for a new type of yoga practice. One day Natalie, master yoga instructor, grabbed a couple of Tyler’s boards and started practicing basic yoga moves like warrior pose and downward dog and the following summer SUP Yoga classes started to gain in popularity.
Today, there are yoga classes all over the metroplex and several new SUP Yoga companies and instructors and hundreds of new participants each year. For some people yoga is about adventure and you cannot ask for a better experience that takes place on the lake during a sunset. Imagine all the same benefits of yoga at your local pool or lake. Yoga + Vitamin D + a focus on balance on a movable object like a standup paddleboard. SUP Yoga is also one of the best ways to learn how to do a headstands without the fear of landing on a hard surface.
Taking a class at DFW Surf with a certified instructor is a great option. DFW Surf is an official affiliate of Life Time Fitness Yoga Program, the Plano Aquatics Program and new classes at the Dallas Jewish Community Center (JCC), City of Bedford, Arlington, Grapevine and more. New for 2015 the DFW Surf Club offers free yoga classes to its members and even indoor classes in the colder months.
